The film has seen 81 percent drop down in business at the UK BO. In fourth weekend the film has approximately collected Rs. 1,31,948 on 2 screens and average working out per screen Rs. 65,998.

In the previous weekend the film has collected Rs. 7,24,773 on 4 screens and average working out per screen Rs. 1,81,181. ‘Nanban’ has totally collected Rs. 1,66,84,296 in 25 days at U.K box office.

When asked about hisentry into active politics, Vijay told reporters in Madurai onWednesday that he would address the question in another pressconference. The actor might not have made a direct statement to answerthe query, but neither did he deny his entry into politics - a factthat enthused his fans.

Illayathalapathy fans all over Kovai were in for a treat, as the actor made a whirlwind visit to Coimbatore on the back of Nanban’s immense success. At the press meet organised by Cosmo Village Pictures, Vijay was truly in his element.
Casually attired in a T-shirt and jeans, the actor distributed giftsand laptops to underprivileged men and women, spent time with his fanclub members, and even joined us for a friendly chat.
“I really don’t know much about the collections and profits thateveryone keeps talking about. I only ask people one thing — whetherthey’re happy once they leave the theatre. I was requested to come toCoimbatore to see the response to Nanban, and I personallyyearned for interaction with the audience and press as well. I, myself,had wanted to see a new Vijay in a movie, and I’m happy that it’sworked out,” he smiles.
So, why did it take him so long to embrace a different role? “Well,I couldn’t do it myself; I needed a director to back me with a goodscript. After Kaavalan, this was one film in which I wasoffered a different role, thanks to Shankar Sir. This is easily one ofmy best films,” says Vijay.
On the experience of working with his Nanban co-stars, hequips, “Both Srikanth and Jiiva were my friends before the shooting;now we’ve become even closer! I’d been waiting to work with SathyarajSir for so long and finally got the chance to. He has no fights orchases in the movie, but he’s pulled off a new type of villainouscharacter brilliantly!”
Was he also a trouble-maker during his college days like his character Pari in Nanban?“I was a normal student honestly. Yes, the occasional mischief didhappen, just like any other youngster,” he admits. Vijay shares a bitabout his next venture, Thuppakki, with director A.R.Murugadoss, “It’s a story set in Mumbai and I just finished a 35-daylong shoot there. It’s a movie in an altogether new dimension, and I’mreally excited about it.”
Nanban’s message was to inspire youngsters to follow theirhearts and take up the careers that they desire, so would he let hisson do the same? “Absolutely! My responsibility is to be a good parentand provide Sanjay with a basic education; he can do whatever he wantsto after that,” he laughs.
A quick tour of Coimbatore followed, with Vijay visiting theatreslike Central, KG Big Cinema and Archana-Darsana, and even watching themovie for a few minutes with the surprised, excited crowd of cheeringfans. All izz well, indeed!

The director AR Murugadoss saw the movie Nanban on Monday and praised the movie and the actor's performance in the film.

He wrote on his twiiter said that, “Watched Nanban Vijay has given a rocking performance! Can't wait to get back working with him soon...once the strike ends!”

Vijay’s next titled ‘Thuppakki’ is a big banner film and has an estimated budget of Rs 60 crore. and it is said that the first look of the flim is released on Mid-february. Snehithudu to release on Jan. 26

Shankar's Snehithudu, which is a remake of the Hindi blockbuster 3 Idiots, is all set to be released on the 26th of January. The movie is a dubbed version of the Tamil film Nanban, which has been doing well since its release for Pongal. Starring Vijay, Jiiva and Sriram(Srikanth) in the roles of three college buddies, Snehithudu has Illeana reprising Kareena Kapoor's role, while Satyaraj is reprising Boman Irani's.

The film's music, by Harris Jayraj, was released recently. According to the producers, Gemini Film Circuit, the audio has been receiving great response across the State. "Following the audio's success, we are planning to release the film on a big scale," they said. The film offers Vijay, the Mahesh Babu of Kollywood, an opportunity to become familiar with the Telugu audience.

"Nanban has been a big hit in Tamil. It is being released in Telugu as Republic Day gift. I hope that Snehithudu will give me a break as a hero. I feel lucky to have worked with a great director like Shankar", the top actor averred.

Snehithudu has a lot of interest going for it just as Shankar's films have always enjoyed in Andhra Pradesh. The very popular 'Balatkar' character from the film has been dubbed by 'Poola Rangadu' Sunil. Looks like there is lot to watch out for in this one.

Vijay is ecstatic, for he has received accolades from none other than Kamal Haasan. Recently, a special screening of 'Nanban' was held for Kamal and the 'Ulaga Nayakan' was all praise for the 'Ilaya Thalapathy' after he watched the film.
"On learning that Kamal is back from the United States, where he was shooting for his multicrore project 'Viswaroopam', Vijay arranged a special show of 'Nanban' for him, at a preview theatre in Chennai," we hear that the actor was impressed by Vijay's performance.
"Kamal, who watched the film with all interest, hugged and appreciated Vijay after the show. He lauded the efforts of director Shankar, Vijay and others involved in the movie. In short, Kamal was thoroughly impressed with 'Nanban'," they add.
A couple of days ago, Vijay organised a press meet in Chennai to celebrate the success of the film. "I am thankful to my fans for making the movie a mega hit. They have accepted me playing a soft role, without any stunts and punch dialogues," he said.

Vijay’s Shankar directed Nanban has been declared a super hit by the trade.

The film opened in nearly 625 screens in Tamil Nadu in its first two days (Jan 12 &13) without any opposition.

Nanban made merry and it helped the film to get the second biggest opening after Enthiran. By Pongal day, the film became steady at the box-office and the word-of-mouth started working to its advantage .

Says Asick Meera of Mariyam Pictures who purchased the TK area: “Nanban is running packed houses in 33 release stations and there is no drop so far. After Enthiran, Nanban is the only film which is drawing repeat audience and is going steady. The collections are on par with Enthiran first week collections and the film has netted Rs 2.75 Crores in its opening week, which is phenomenal by any yardstick.”

Added Sivakumar of Cosmo Village Pictures, the distributor for Coimbatore & Nilgiri area: “We gave Nanban a very big release by opening in 70 screens and has netted an awesome Rs 5.20 Crore in the first week so far and has been drawing unprecedented crowds especially in small towns. What is remarkable is that the film has done excellent business at single screens as well as multiplexes, a feat which only Enthiran has managed in the recent past”

Nanban is also testimony to the fact that Vijay is one of the biggest stars in Tamil films with an assured opening. Shankar is the biggest brand in south cinema and the combo with Vijay worked wonders for the film.

Family audiences took advantage of the long weekend to catch the faithful 3 Idiots remake. Gemini Film Circuit, the producers hit the bull’s eye by releasing the film for Pongal which ensured the family audiences came in droves and the word of mouth promotions by the masses has worked well for the film.

World Popular singer Akon will be soon singing a song in Tamil. The credit for bringing him to the Kollyood goes to AR Murugadoss, who has signed him for his upcoming movie Thupaki.

it's almost official that Akon will be singing one song in this album and it is said that it will be recorded shortly in Chennai following which the makers will announce it. The makers are keen on making this single track a super hit and want to market it aggressively post the release of the music album of 'Thupaki'.

Celebrities from Tamil and Bollywood remained the special attraction of the audio launch function of Snehitudu, a remake of Tamil movie Nanban. The glitz and glamour event was attended by Bollywood filmmakers Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Raju Hirani, Tamil actors Vijay, Srikanth and many other well-known personalities.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Ram Charan Teja jointly launched the music album of Snehitudu last evening (January 19) at Shilpa Kala Vedika, Hyderabad. He presented the CDs to the other guests like Raju Hirani, Sharman Joshi, Ileana D'Cruz, Vijay, Srikanth, Sathyaraj, SJ Surya, musician Harris Jayaraj, sound engineer Resul Pookutty.

Speaking at the function, Shankar, whose films often get dubbed in Telugu, narrated how and why he decided to do a remake for the first time. The filmmaker said that it was during the shooting of Robot, when the filming was cancelled due to some reasons in Pune, he, by chance, saw Bollywood movie 3 Idiots along with the film unit.

While his team was having fun watching the film, the director was not able to enjoy, as he was worried about the delay in his movie. However, Shankar suddenly realized it and made his mind to watch without thinking about his project. This is when he came to know that how wonderful 3 Idiots was and he instantly decided to remake it so that the South Indian audience could also get the same kind of entertainment.

On his turn, Vijay spoke in Telugu and said that he love Telugu audience and movies. Other guests, who were present at the event, echoed the similar thoughts and hoped that Snehitudu would impress the Kollywood audience

Vijay is cool and composed as usual. The Ilayathalapathy of Tamil cinema is on cloud nine as Nanban released for Pongal is running to packed houses and the film has taken a gargantuan opening at the ticket windows. His fans have accepted the film and audience worldwide say that the remake from 3 Idiots, a cult classic was indeed an image-make over for the star. But Vijay begs to differ with this observation.

Sridevi Sreedhar, met up with Vijay after Nanban took the biggest-ever first-day opening. Excerpts

Are you happy about the response that Nanban has been receiving?
I am pleased (smiled) that everyone likes the film. It is the victory of the script.

They say Nanban is a faithful remake and that’s why it worked. Was it a conscious effort to stick to the original?
Yes, initially when I met up with Shankar, he was very clear that we should not tamper with the script. He made a few subtle nativity changes, dialogues, the look and the songs. Rest of it is the same.

But how were you convinced about doing a remake like this, in which you didn’t have a mass hero image?
( Thinking) I had seen 3 Idiots when it released and loved the film. Never in my wildest dream did I think that I will do the remake. But when Gemini approached me, I was in two minds but soon I heard that Shankar will direct the film and I was sure that it was a risk worth taking.

How was it working with Shankar?
He was a treat to work with. He gave me complete freedom and I realized that having done few dramas earlier, he is an amazing actor himself and that’s why he can enact the right emotion he wants for you.

Were you influenced by Aamir Khan’s acting in 3 Idiots?
Like I said earlier, I infused my style and body language to the role. But there are certain cute expressions that Aamir did in 3 Idiots which I didn’t want to miss and so I incorporated it in Nanban.

Are you changing tracks and trying to reinvent your image with Nanban?
I have been doing different kind of films for a long time and it’s surprising that you are making a note of it now. I have worked on diverse films like Kathalikku Mariyadai, Thullatha Manavum Thullum, Friends or Kaavalan at regular intervals. Somehow this news of me changing tracks with reputed directors like Shankar, Murugadoss and Gautham Menon has been doing the rounds.

Let me tell you that I always wanted to work in varied scripts but sadly no such scripts came knocking at my doors. And I was forced to go back and make a minimum guarantee mass film with four action scenes, song ‘n’ dances and viola, a film was ready. Films like Nanban has to happen and we can’t plan and go search for it.

Tell us about the rapport you shared with Jiiva and Srikanth?
When we started the film, I hardly knew them but by the time the film ended, I got two buddies for life. We bonded well and that shows in the film. They both did their respective roles with conviction and I love the scene when Srikanth confronts his dad. It was very touching.

All the songs are picturised lavishly. Which is your favourite?Aska Laska and En Frienda Pola are my favourites. But lot of people like Irukkaanna choreographed by Farah Khan.

Heard that your wife Sangeetha hugged you after watching the film?
Yes, she was so happy and even said that it is my career best film. I went for some promotions after the first show and came back home late but my son was waiting for me. When I stepped out of my car he pulled down his pants and said “Thalaiva you are great” like how Jiiva and Srikanth does in the film. I was so touched and it was the biggest compliment I received.

As we're nearing Pongal, the excitement among eagerfans has become multi-fold. The latest is that, 'Nanban' will be thefirst ever Tamil film which will be released with French subtitles inFrance!

The past year was rewarding, and the New Year looks good. Actor Vijay talks to Malathi Rangarajan about the engaging time ahead

He has been on a victory march in the past year.After a lull in 2010, Vijay bounced back with Kaavalan, a remake of the Malayalam hit, Bodyguard, in January 2011. The assortment of sentiment, romance and comedy went down well with viewers and Vijay was in the saddle once again. Then came Velayudham that re-instated him as an unassailable action hero. The two films helped him stay put at the top.

The year also saw international recognition come Vijay's way for the first time — Kaavalan was selected for screening in the Panorama section at the prestigious 14 Shanghai International Film Festival. Two hundred films among 2500 entries from 80 countries were chosen and Kaavalan found a place among them! Also, he signed on the dotted line to team up with big film makers, viz., Shankar, A. R. Murugadoss and Gautam Vasudev Menon. The films should roll out one after the other. The first will be Shankar's Nanban, a Pongal bonanza from Ilaiya Thalapathi. Vijay should be a happy man. “I am,” is his pithy reply.

Presently camping in Mumbai for Murugadoss' Thuppaaki, when I text him for a suitable time to talk, Vijay calls up right away! And for the first time in more than half-a-dozen face-to-face interactions and an equal number of telephone conversations I've had with the rather taciturn actor, I get glimpses of his sense of humour and wit. Though the opening refrain was the usual, “What-can-I-say-about-my-film” line, a little prodding makes me realise that adverse comments about his pre-release exchanges early in his career have irked him no end. “I've had my share of brickbats and they've made me cautious. Frankly, my promises could appear tall. And after the release people could think the film didn't live up to the hype. So what's the point?” Yet in an industry where feverish ad campaigns and promos in every form are imperative, can he eschew them completely? “I can't. Have I not called you up? I know publicity is a must. Only that after a point I want my films to do the talking,” he demurs.

Standing ovation

I temporarily shift focus to his visit to the 14 Shanghai International Film Festival as a guest of honour in June last, and the actor unwinds. It was the first time a Vijay film was screened at a film fest. “Rekhs, the co-ordinator for South Indian movies for international film fests, was instrumental in sending Kaavalan to Shanghai. She had done the subtitling too,” he informs. The experience must have been new to him. “Very, I was dressed appropriately in a three-piece suit for the occasion, but very tense. I sat with the audience, most of them Chinese, for some time. Then I decided to wait outside. I could make out that they were enjoying Kaavalan. Later when the film turned serious, there was silence. And I was overwhelmed by the standing ovation at the end. The reaction was very much similar to what I'd seen, say, at Sathyam Cinemas! As they came out, they congratulated me, sought my autograph and throughout the interaction addressed me as ‘Bhoominathan,' my name in the film! ‘Great job, Bhoomi,' they went on. That's when I realised language is no barrier to understanding emotions. And with the smattering of English I know, I responded,” laughs Vijay.

In all our conversations Vijay never fails to spell out his limitations as he sees them. “Come on, don't give me that line. Not wanting to converse in English is far different from not being able to,” I reply. He smiles.

Now I change tack to Nanban, his next. He's an ace dancer. Did Ileana, his heroine, find it tough to keep pace with him? “Her footwork is amazing. I was the one who had to watch out,” that's his modesty at work again!

Remakes aren't new to Vijay. He's done many, and successfully too. But Vijay replicating Aamir Khan is a surprise! “I had watched Three Idiots with my family at Mayajaal and enjoyed it to the hilt. But never did I think I would be part of its Tamil trip. When the offer came my way, I was sceptical and told director Shankar so. ‘This kind of film is new to me too. But I'm sure you'll be apt for the role,' he said.”

A dream come true

“It was a great experience. Most of the shooting was at Dehradun and it was fun working with Srikanth and Jiiva.” Vijay had known Srikanth even earlier. “But I got to move with Jiiva only during Nanban, and we hit it off instantly.” Satyaraj dons the role that Boman Irani so effectively portrayed in Three Idiots. “Every hero here yearns to work with Satyaraj playing the anti. I'm glad Nanban fulfilled my desire,” he says.

Not only 2011, by the looks of it the year that's just dawned should be equally engaging for Vijay. Following Thuppakki should be Gautham Menon's action franchise, Yohan. “Let's save that for our chat later,” he laughs.

Though a remake, Shankar has vested Nanban with his typical touches. “The ‘Asku Laska' number is a situation you don't find in Hindi,” Vijay informs and suddenly remembers he doesn't wish to say much. “You make me divulge more than I intend to,” he laughs. “The audience should come to the film without any expectation. I don't wish to create any hype.” The catchy numbers of Nanban, courtesy Harris Jeyaraj, are chartbusters. This is his first score for a Vijay film. “But he's given the music for my ad campaigns,” says Vijay.

“Most of us have watched Three Idiots. Yet, thanks to Shankar, viewers should find Nanban fresh,” he pauses and adds with a chortle, “See, there I go again …”

Dil Raju says 3 rascals Is Postponed

Ace producer-distributor Dil Raju has decided todefer the release of 3 Rascals by 12 days. The film, which was set torelease on Jan. 14, has been postponed till Jan. 26. Shortage oftheaters or certain commercial compulsions seem to have compelled theproducers to procrastinate the release.

The Tamil version, Nanban, is releasing as per theschedule, though. This might be one of the least-awaited Shankarfilms, but the film holds a great market potential since it is acollege campus story with clean humour and compelling messageinterspersed into the story. Vijay's Yohan goes International with EROS

Eros International Media Ltd (EIML), a leading global company in the Indian film entertainment industry, has announced a co-production deal with Photon Kathaas Productions (“PKP”) for a Tamil film titled Yohan: Adhyayam Ondru (John: Chapter 1) starring Vijay. Produced in association with Future Film Production Ltd (UK Production), the film will be directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon with music by A R Rehman and is expected to commence production from Q2 2012.

Yohan is the first of its kind (in South India) action thriller centering around a character that will be featured in a series of films (prequels and sequels). The film will be shot in international locations, predominantly in the United Kingdom with the active support of the UK government. The UK has a very favourable policy towards encouraging foreign film makers to shoot their films in the UK.

AR Murugadoss is gearing up for his next project, which will star Vijay. The filmmaker, who received mixed response for his recently released 7aam Arivu from the audience and critics, is all set to start his next biggie in Thiruchendur, Thoothukudi district.

The makers of the film have decided to launch the forthcoming multilingual movie at the Thiruchendur Murugan temple, one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga. The story of the movie will start from the seaside and then moves on to Mumbai, where the major part of the movie will be shot. It is said to be a gangster film, which would a action-packed film.

Sharp, measured and bright. That's exactly how one can best describe actor Vijay's responses to searching questions posed by City Express.

The star, who has proven to industry pundits through his back-to-back hits with 'Kaavalan' and 'Velayutham' that he is still a force to be reckoned with in Kollywood, is clearly on a winning spree. And that spree might just not be confined to Kollywood and may well extend to the business of politics, if one is to go by the indications given by the star.

With 'Velayudham' still going strong after having been declared a hit in over 800 centres and with three other big films with established directors like Shankar, Murugadoss and Gautam Menon all set to follow, Vijay's reply to his critics, who wrote him off after Sura's failure, it seems, is only bound to get stronger and louder in the coming days.

Beginning by commenting on his experience of working on 'Velayutham', Vijay says, "We worked really hard for a year. In fact, when about 60 percent of this film was over, I recalled all the scenes that we had shot and knew then itself that this movie would work big time. I told director Jayam Raja too about this feeling of mine."

But then, draw his attention to the fact that during Deepavali, there were reports of a battle being silently fought over screens and he responds by thinking for a complete minute before answering, "I want to discuss something useful. Today, my movie's a hit and that is all that matters."

'Velayutham's handsome performance at the box office, that too close on the heels of 'Kavalan's success, is certainly a shot in the arm for him. But he Sharp, measured and bright. That's exactly how one can best describe actor Vijay's responses to searching questions posed by City Express.

Did he actually make a conscious effort to plan these films to reverse his fortunes at the box office? Responds Vijay, "Everybody goes through these phases. I don't pay too much attention to them. I went through a bad phase and now it is going well. I don't plan anything. If something appeals to me, I do it. For instance, I was supposed to do a movie a couple of years ago with Jayam Raja. But then, that never materialised. Had it materialised also, we still could not have been sure if it would have been as successful as 'Velayutham' has been."

The actor's next film to hit screens will be Shankar's 'Nanban', the Tamil remake of the blockbuster '3 Idiots'. Initially, rumours were doing the rounds in the industry that all was not well between the ace director and Vijay and as a result, Vijay had even walked out of the project only to return later.

Refuting these rumours, Vijay says, "Firstly, director Shankar is a wonderful human being. I've known him from the days he was an assistant director to my dad. His growth has been nothing less than phenomenal and I've been both impressed and proud of his growth. As for the rumours, there is no truth in them. The only thing that we had to sort out was the dates problem. 'Nanben's offer came my way when I was half-way through 'Velayutham' and managing dates wasn't easy. But we figured a way out."

About the cast of 'Nanben', Vijay says, "Both Srikanth and Jiiva are good friends. Sathyaraj Sir plays the villain in the film. Tamil cinema would not have witnessed a bond as the one that exists between Sathyaraj Sir and me in this film."

Finally, ask Vijay where he sees himself five years from now, Kollywood or Bollywood and he pauses. "I don't plan anything. Especially, anything that's that long", he says.

Persist and ask him, 'Politics'? He smiles and signs off saying, "May be".

Vijay starrer Velayudham has beaten Surya's prestigious 7aam Arivu at the Tamil Box Office (BO) in its first week. M.Rajah directorial movie has successfully managed to rock at the BO.
Trade reports say that Velayudham has managed to collect Rs.52.2 crore plus, whereas 7aam Arivu raked in Rs. 50.2 crore in the first week. Surya's movie had edge over Vijay starrer film because it hit the screens with 1200 prints worldwide. On the other end, Jayam Raja's movie, which was approximately released in 820 theatres, started attracting audience after getting thumbs up from the fans and good word-of-mouth from the viewers.
It is said that the state government's permission to increase the screenings during the 5-day weekend have helped the producers of both the films to large extent.

However, the collections of 7aam Arivu are expected to slow down, as the theatre owners are now planning to reduce the number of screenings thereby increasing Velayudham.

Velayudham has been liked by the audience and critics. How do you feel?
I am very happy. After one year of hard work put in by the whole team, it's nice to reap the rewards. I was keen on working with Jayam Raja and I am glad this worked out well for us.

Were you confident the movie would click?
When you are making certain movies, you know almost instinctively that it will work. When this movie was 60 per cent complete, I told director Raja that I had seen the rushes and I am confident that the movie will turn out well. The highlight of this film is the story. My father always says that for a movie to be a commercial success, the base of the film has to be strong. I also don't believe in talking too much about my film before it releases - I would like the audience to go with an open mind, without any expectations and really enjoy it. And I think they did.

So it's a remake of Azaad...
It's been inspired by Azaad. I first saw that film years ago and I thought I should do a film like that at some point. When I met director Raja and we got chatting, this movie came to mind. And then we realized the remake rights were actually with my father!

There was talk that you had trouble getting adequate screens to release Velayudham....
I don't want to waste time talking about such things. The movie is a success and that's all that matters.

How is Nanban coming along?
If Velayudham has been a success, Nanban will create euphoria of a different kind. Everyone would have seen 3 idiots. Even if you have seen the Hindi version, the Tamil film will be fresh. Director Shankar has tailor-made it for the Tamil audience.

Director Shankar...
Working with director Shankar has been an amazing experience. I was supposed to do Mudhalvan with him but it didn't work out unfortunately. His knack of bringing out a performance from an actor was novel to me. He appreciates the little nuances in an actor. And, he's a wonderful human being as well.

Are remakes a good trend?
I personally believe it's a healthy trend. We are taking something that has already worked and adapting it to our sensibilities. When the remake of 3 idiots came along, I definitely wanted to do it.

You have seen a few ups and downs in the last few years...
Sura was one film which affected me terribly (laughs)... but it was my mistake. I did the film with full faith, but unfortunately it didn't work. Kaavalan was cute and it did well.

Would you want to do try something offbeat?
I would like to try different things within the framework of commercial cinema which I have been successful at.

And what keeps you busy at home?
Right now, I am between films so I am spending a lot of time with my family.

Though Vijay's penchant for mass masala themes is common knowl edge, the actor is consciously trying to change his image. Choosing Gen Y directors like Shankar, Gautham Menon and Murugadoss for his future offerings after completing half century in Tamil cinema is proof of the same.

Reacting to this, Vijay said, “Whatever came my way I accepted it. Even now, these directors approached me with suitable scripts and I was too happy to be a part of it.“ Can we expect a new Vijay from these films? “I also hope that they will project me differently,“ he muses.

The Velayudham star could not stop raving about director Shankar. “I will call him the Spielberg of India. His technical expertise simply amazes me. He acts out each and every scene including minute details, which made our job easier. I simply go without any preparation.“

Sources say that Vijay plays an International agent in Gautham's Yohan Adhyayam Ondru, a high action thriller.

Reportedly Gautham has said that he and Vijay wanted to work together for a long time, but things materialised only recently .

In a conversation with IG, Vijay expressed his Diwali plans, of watching every single release, 'Velayudham', '7aum Arivu' and 'Ra.One'. "I have been doing this every Diwali! 'Velayutham' is a realistic film: Vijay

"The film, which revolves around an ordinary milkman trying to eradicate corruption, is not a super hero film as described in a section of the media, but a realistic movie," Vijay told reporters here.
The actor was in Kochi for the trailer release of the film in which Genelia D'Souzha and Hansika Motwani are doing lead roles along with him. Asked if he was interested in doing Malayalam films, the actor quipped he was prepared to do so, but was yet to get any invitation from the superstars. "Realistic Malayalam films have good acceptance in Tamil Nadu," he said.

Directors Fazil and Siddiq had given him good roles in Tamil films, which had boosted his career, Vijay said.

Read on as Vijay gets candid and speaks on his role in Velayudham, clarifies reports on the much talked about Dookudu remake, his project with AL Vijay, his plans this Diwali and a lot more!Excerpts from the chat with the ace personality…

How did this film with Jayam Raja happen?

I have watched all his films and I was supposed to work with him two years back itself under Sanguli Murugan sir’s banner. We missed out on it and he started off a project with his brother, Jayam Ravi. Then we met one day and he came with a one-liner on Velayudham which interested me so we started off with this project immediately. I asked him jokingly whether he will do movies only with his brother and not me and that’s how all this started off.

This is a commercial entertainer and you have delivered many time and again. But this is your first part superhero project, what’s special about it? What about the horse riding scenes?

Yes but this is not a superhero film with extra powers for the hero or something on those lines. 'Velayudham' portrays the hero somewhere between a common man and a superhero. Speaking on horse riding, actually I learnt horse riding quite a while ago, even before stepping into films. All the training is being of use to me now (smiles).

Most of your films highlight upon brother – sister bonding, but can we say your bond with Saranya forms the crux of this plot as she has reported in an interview?

No it definitely is not the crux of the film but can be called as one of the highlights in 'Velayudham'. No matter what, be it now or after many years, this is one relationship among our folk that will never change! It’s an evergreen something.

Speaking on stunts, are there other highlights apart from the train stunt sequence?

Tom Delmar did the train sequence and yes, much has been spoken about it to audiences already. Apart from this there’s a fight scene in a harbor which will definitely be a big highlight in 'Velayudham', I can assure it will be something very interesting to look forward to and something my fans will enjoy watching on-screen.

How true is it that there are 30 comedians?

Well, I can say that under Santhanam’s captainship there will 29 comedians. There’s a whole team of comedians itself that he heads so we have meant it in that way.

All your forthcoming films are with top-notch directors, Murugadoss, Gautham Menon and Shankar. We understand we'll be seeing a suave avatar of Vijay, but why haven't we seen this earlier?

To tell the truth, honestly, I have been approached by all these directors only now and I loved the scripts so I accepted them. It is not like I wanted to do these kind of films only now but these projects are coming my way only now and I am happy to accept them.

Are you doing Dookudu remake?

I watched the film, I really liked and enjoyed watching it but I am not doing the film’s Tamil remake.

Udhaynidhi has expressed he’ll watch 'Velayudham' first show.

When will you watch '7aum Arivu'?

I will definitely watch it on Diwali, no doubts about that but I don’t know which show. I will watch '7aum Arivu', my film 'Velayudham' and 'Ra.One' on Diwali. How many ever films will release that day I will watch them all the very same day, no doubts. That’s how crazy I am about films (smiles).

No doubts we see a balance between Hansika & Genelia in trailers, but can you tell what will be the highlight?

The director has beautifully balanced between Hansika and Genelia’s character. There’s no way anyone can compare their characters since they are so different from one another. My scenes with both of them are like two different episodes to frame it rightly. However I must say that Genelia’s character plays a key role in my character seeing a change in the film, from that of a commoner to that of a superhero.

About your film with AL Vijay…

Yes we both are talking about it but it will take time, probably even two more years to go on floors! But there’s a lot of time for an official announcement on this front.

A recent Tamil film that Vijay enjoyed thoroughly…

'Kanchana'! My kids enjoyed this horror film so very much that when I’m home they’ll be enacting the scenes from the film to me!

Velayudham get U certificate

And the wait is over! Vijay's much awaited Velayudham, directed by Jayam Raja, has received a clean U certificate from the Censor Board yesterday. The filmmaker, is all set to work with Vikram-Anushka- Amy Jackson combo, which begins in December According to trade sources Vijay has been offered a whopping Rs 2.5 crores remuneration for this venture from UTV, the production house, which wil be making the untitled film.

The actor is reportedly being paid 5 crore for a commercial

Looks like Vijay is the latest hero who is going to make waves on TV for a commercial - not just any commercial but one for a telecom company. Our K-town heroes don't often consent to doing commercials but one favourite of theirs seems to be telecom companies. Suriya's association with a local telecom company is well-known as he has been their brand ambassador for years. And his brother Karthi followed suit by doing an ad for another telecom company.

Apparently, Vijay has consented to doing the ad and is likely to shoot for it for three days. Known for being choosy about what commercials he wants to feature in, Vijay seems to have given it a go ahead because it's a well-known national brand.

It looks like the actor is also being paid a hefty remuneration for the ad - reportedly 5 crore! Says a source, "Considering he was supposedly paid around 11 crore for the Gautham Menon film he has signed on, this is a good deal he has got." The actor, whose Velayudham is all set to hit screens, is almost finished with the shooting of director Shankar's Nanban, the Tamil remake of the superhit 3 idiots.

Trade sources are speculating that 'Velayudham' will be one of the biggest releases on the international front after the Rajinikanth - Shankar venture, 'Endhiran', as it is said that Ayngaran will be releasing 'Velayudham' in over 350 theatres in the international market!

The film’s UK theater list has been released by Ayngaran International, According to trade sources, Velayutham will be screened in 26 theatres in UK. Interestingly, Kamal Haasan’s Dasavatharam was screened in about 16 theatres when it was released. Ilayathalapathy Vijay will be battling a host of Bollywood villains in his forthcoming flick Velayudham.
The list of villains include well-known actor Sayaji Shinde, Vineet Kumar and Abhimanyu Singh of Rakhta Charitra fame, whom the film's director M Raja terms as the surprise package.
"Each villain will have his own strength and will be a challenging adversary for the hero," he says. The story of Velayudham is about how an ordinary man in the crowd becomes the leader of the people. Vijay plays a milkman-turned-vigilante in the film. Ilayathalapathy Vijay will shake his legs in the backdrop of picturesque locales of Srinagar for 'Velayudham', as the only one song which is left to be shot will be canned in the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir.

Select members of the cast and crew of 'Velayudham' will leave for Srinagar on September 17 to shoot the number 'Molachu moonu ilai vidala...' Listen here They will be back within a week, sources in the know tell us.

Actor Vijay seems mighty upset with the fact that the incident in which he requested his fans to remove the posters that depict him as God has been blown out of proportion.

In a statement to the press, the Ilayathalapathy said, "During the audio launch of my film Velayudham in Madurai, some of my fans had put up a banner in which I was depicted as God. I immediately asked them to remove the posters and they did. But, a few miscreants are creating an issue. I don't agree with the practice of showcasing a man as God. And I don't discriminate against people based on caste, creed or their status. I have friends, fans and workers who belong to different communities. I don't know what caste they belong to and it doesn't matter because I believe that everyone is a Tamilian at heart."

Ilayathalapathy fans are as happy as much as the actor is, what with two biggies taking shape and gearing up for a release, 'Velayudham' will see light of the day some time soon followed by 'Nanban' this Diwali.

Enthusing fans even more comes this update from Director Shankar, who wrote on his micro-blogging page that 'Nanban' is 98.8888% complete!

"We've successfully completed 98.8888% of Nanban, and the rest is one song and a quarter of another song, which will be shot in the first week of September. I feel Nanban has shaped up well in all aspects, but the highlight of the film will be its characters and excellent performances of the artists in it. It's going to be a treat watching Vijay, Jiiva, Sathyaraj, Srikanth, Ileana together", says the excited director.

Not just that, every scene that has been canned has been edited and dubbed till date!

Vijay threw a party for the completion of the film that brought together the cast and crew of the film, who had a gala time at the party. Shankar also expressed that he is working on the final edit of the film for the background score.

Velayutham breaks all records

Velayudham has broken all records and we have sold all our units within a day of its launch. The soundtracks are original, soulful and memorable. Vijay is in a state of euphoria. The actor is gearing up for his next big event — the audio launch of his new film Velayudham

Produced by Aascar Films and directed by Jayam Raja, the movie stars leading ladies Genelia and Hansika.

Vijay, who plays the title role, says of his character, “Every actor would love to act in a superhero subject at least once in their careers. I too nurtured this secret ambition. Velayudham fell within the ambit of a superhero script. It has everything that a fan expects from me. Every action performed by me, flows logically in the film. This was another factor which attracted me to the subject when Raja narrated it.”

About the music from Vijay Antony the Ilaya Thalapathy comments admiringly, “Our combo in Vettaikkaran has already rocked. But when it came to Velayudham, Antony worked ten times harder than he did for the earlier one. I simply love all the songs in the film.”

Another highlight of the film, says Vijay, is the spine-chilling train fight sequence.

“The high action train fight appears in a crucial segment, which has in no way been forced into the script. It was a great experience working with Hollywood stunt expert Tom Delmar, who has choreographed some breathtaking action sequences for major films like Aliens, Snatch and 102 Dalmatians.”

Word has it that the actor has performed dangerous stunts without a substitute.

Vijay grins, “This is not the first time I have attempted risky fights without a body double.” He adds saying, “I admit the one we did atop a running train was a bit scary. But Tom taught me a few new techniques which protected me from getting hurt during the shooting.”

Velayudham audio launch a grand affair

The audio launch of Vijay's Velayudham, directed by Raja, was completely a fan's fair.

The CSI Church grounds in Madurai was overflowing with thousands of his fans, who had travelled to Madurai from different districts. Singers from Lakshman Sruthi and music director Vijay Antony wowed the crowd with several Vijay hits, making it a musical evening. Sangeetha Rajeshwaran, Krishna Iyer, Harish Raghavendra and Madhumita also crooned three songs from the album.

The frenzied moment came when Vijay made a grand entry, with drums thundering to welcome him. He waved to the audience before walking the ramp in style to pick two fans (Deepak and Uma Maheshwari) to release the album. Hansika did a 'Vanakkam Madurai' as the crowd broke into loud cheers. It's no news that Velayudham is one of the most important films in Vijay's career. He is going the extra mile to make sure that the film comes out well and satisfies his fans' expectations. So, it's no surprise that the actor gifted all his chief technicians gold chains when he saw the climax of the film recently.

A source reveals, "Recently, Vijay was shooting a dance number in a set erected at a mill in the city. During the break hours, director Raja screened the climax of the film for his team. Vijay, who had earlier seen the film in bits and portions, was moved when he saw the way the climax had shaped up. He was close to tears and fought hard to control his emotions. He was moved by the way Raja and cameraman Priyan had shot the scenes. In a bid to express his gratitude, he immediately arranged for gold chains, each worth one sovereign, to be bought. He personally gifted it to his chief technicians."

Raja explains, "Vijay said this was one of the best climax scenes that he has ever shot for. He told me that the film has come out way better than what he expected and it would be visible when the audience sees it. Earlier, he had called my father (editor Mohan) to tell him how much he loved the film when I had screened a portion of it. I was waiting for Vijay to tell me his views directly, but it was really an honour to hear it from my dad."

Titled 'Yohan: Adhyayam Ondru', the film will see Vijay essaying protagonist, direction by Gautham Menon and production by the latter's banner, Photon Kathaas. If Kamal's fans donated blood and promoted organ transplantation during their idol's birthday, Ilayathalapathy's fans recently came together for a mass eye donation drive.

Recently a meeting was held at Aasari Pallam, a small village near NagarKovil. The meeting was a rendezvous of Vijay fan club members and had director and father of the actor, S.A. Chandrasekar as the guest. During the meeting around 50 members of the fan club came forward to donate their eyes.

The volunteers as well as director SAC visited the Aasari Pallam Govt. Hospital where the fans are believed to have donated their eyes and were distributed certificates by the director. SAC who was very touched by this encouraged his son's fans to keep up their good work.

And then, at a function organized at the Shobha Marriage Hall in Saligramam he distributed home appliances, provisions, school supplies and other aids to a number of people in the presence of many of his fans and well wishers.

Looks like the Seeman – Vijay duo is keen on starting ‘Pagalavan’ right after Vijay finishes up with ‘Nanban,’ a multi-starrer under Shankar’s direction.

We had earlier told you the script consisted of a doctor Vijay, who plays the role of Pugazhendi and serves the poor in a village and then fights a mafia who deals with expired medicines.

But now, Seeman has brought about certain changes in ‘Pagalavan’s script, making it a whole-new-package altogether!

This new aspect will show a young Vijay fighting for a cause, against the privatization of certain sectors by the Government. ‘Pagalavan’ will see a rough-tough war between Vijay who is a doctor and a police officer. And during these fights, Vijay realizes he can do better for the common man if he is a part of the police force.

He then studies IPS, rises to power as a police official in the society and puts an end to the mafia who is dealing with expired medicines.

So yes, Vijay dons the avatar of a doctor and later a police officer in ‘Pagalavan.’ We must remember that Vijay’s earlier movie where he played a cop - ‘Pokkiri’ was a blockbuster.

We had already updated you regarding Vijay agreeing to director’s Seeman's 'Pagalavan.' The script of this film has been ready since two years but did not take off for various reasons. But all that is history now. Vijay will start working for 'Pagalavan' after he wraps up 'Nanban' and 'Velayudham.'

With many government organizations getting privatized, if this trend continues the nation will have to dance to the tunes of the rich and the affluent. This being the backdrop Vijay will appear in this film as a bold and outgoing youngster who will be seen fighting for his rights as well as that of his peers.

The talkie portions of both films are almost over. What remains is some patchwork and a song or two which will be picturised overseas. Director M Raja, who is busy with Velayudham, says, "We have almost completed the entire talkie portion of the film and have to shoot two songs. The post-production work will take a month. Taking shape on fast-track, details about Shankar's 'Nanban' are being guarded like an army secret. But still, we managed to get some juicy info on the Vijay-Srikanth-Jeeva starrer, which is a remake of 'Three Idiots'.

Shankar, we hear, has totally cutdown the north Indian flavour we saw in 'Three Idiots' and made several changes to the script. "Nanban is not a line-by-line of remake of the Aamir Khan starrer," say sources.

For example, there are a couple of scenes shot in a college in western Tamil Nadu, which one could not find in'‘Three Idiots'. Also, a few new characters are also there in 'Nanban' script.

"Shankar has carefully designed the looks of all lead players. Funny among them would be the 'bakthi pazham' getup of Jeeva. Kareena Kapoor's character, which is being played by Ileana, has also undergone various changes."

It’s almost confirmed. And only an official announcement has to be made. That ‘Nanban’, the Vijay-Srikanth-Jeeva starrer directed by Shankar, will see the light of the day on the day of lights- Deepavali.

A Tamil remake of Hindi blockbuster ‘Three Idiots’, ‘Nanban’ is busy taking shape in Coimbatore, Ooty, Andaman and Amsterdam. “Most parts of the shoot are over and Shankar will commence post-production soon,” say sources.

It is to be noted here that Shankar would take enough time for post-production since the director would never be ready for any compromise on the end product. “Since this is his first remake, he is putting extra efforts.”

With Ileana playing the role played by Kareena Kapoor in the Hindi original, Sathyaraj is doing the character of a college principal, who is the heroine’s father. Anuya has an important role, that of Ileana’s elder sister.

Today, the sets of Vijay’s forthcoming flick, ‘Velayudham’ saw its team geared up in perfect celebration mode.

While the team was gathered for a shoot at the industry’s dearest Binny mill at Meenambakkam, near the airport, director Jayam Raja received a pleasant surprise from his team.

The protagonist of the film, Vijay, brought a cake that bore the wordings, ‘settai sadhuvuku pirandha naal vazhthukal.’ Meaning, we wish a happy birthday to our ‘innocent’ prankster. Raja celebrated his birthday in the presence of Ilaya Thalapathi Vijay, cameraman Priyan and the crew of ‘Velayudham.’

We must remember that it was Ilaya Thalapathi who was behind the birthday surprises of other members of the film including Hansika, Saranya Mohan and cameraman Priyan.

Whatever Ilaya Thalapathi Vijay does, creates a buzz among film buffs. The star’s works were earlier much-talked about in the state for his open and continuous support towards the AIADMK political party during the Tamil Nadu state elections.

The star recently met his fans at the Sangeetha Mandapam, a wedding hall in Chennai. The event was conducted by Vijay to thank his fans for respecting his word and supporting the AIADMK political party during the state elections.

The star was overwhelmed with gratitude that his fans chose to respect his word as there are several other political parties, but they chose to believe their idol’s sense of right and wrong. He expressed that his fans’ club, by doing good deeds will be one that works for the civilians and that they will show continuous support to the Chief Minister in all her deeds.

"I've never waited with bated breath even for my film's release. But I was excited and eagerly anticipated the results for the state election. I hoped that those whom I supported won," said Vijay, at the 'thank you' meet he had organised for the members of Makkal Iyakkam, his fans' association.

The meet, which is seen by critics as a move by the actor to step closer to politics, got the usually-reticent Vijay talking about a variety of topics, including politics. A source close to the actor revealed, "He (Vijay) wanted his fans to work towards ending the dominance of the family that ruled Kollywood. But he was glad when he got feedback from AIADMK sources stating that his fans had done much more than what was expected."

We hear that the actor was more than happy when he realized that despite having their own political preferences, his fans went in for his choice. "A lot of his fans supported Amma on his request. Vijay equates his role in the election to that of a squirrel, which helped in building a bridge for Rama to cross the ocean in Ramayana."

Though the actor didn't give clear indication about his next political move, he admitted that he wanted his Makkal Iyakkam to be "much more than just a fans' association." The source added, "He doesn't want them to just catch his movies on the first day and be involved in mass fanfare. He wants his fans to do their best to provide support for a good rule in the state. At the same time, he reminded them that they have families to look after and that he's ready to go all out to help them in times of need."

At the thank-you press meet, the shy actor, who was accompanied by directorfather S A Chandrasekhar, even went to the extent of singing a song from his forthcoming film. "Unlike Kaavalan, a soft romantic film, Velayudham will be a mass entertainer," the actor is believed to have said, "Every actor has a gut instinct while working on a film about its success and I'm confident director Raja's efforts will not go waste. And, Shankar's Nanban will be my next big film."

Meanwhile, rumour has it that the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa will launch the audio of Velayudham, which has raised many eyebrows in the industry. "An official announcement will be made when the time's right," said the source when asked about it.

Soon after returning from Swiss, Jiiva flew down to Coimbatore to participate in the Nanban shooting. Director Shanakar and team are stationed in Coimbatore where some very important scenes are being canned.
Jiiva, who was busy wrapping up Vandhan Vendran, has joined the Nanban unit and will complete his portions.
Nanban is the remake of the Hindi smash hit film 3 Idiots which starred Aamir Khan, Maadhvan and Sharman Joshi. In the Tamil version, Vijay, Jiiva and Srikanth essay these roles. Ileana plays the female lead.
